TOEFL Reading Tips

TOEFL test consist of four sections namely Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Like IELTS reading section, TOEFL reading section also helps you to score good marks if you put the right amount of practice and hard work in it. The first section in TOEFL is the Reading section and it includes long passages, which you need to read and answer accordingly. There will be three or four passages in the reading section and each passages includes a set of 12 MCQ’s. Without any training and practice, it is very difficult to score good marks in reading section. Therefore, it is good to take TOEFL coaching from some good institutes before the test. Also, these tips can help you to score good marks:

• Increase the speed of reading: In TOEFL reading section, you can get up to 56 questions from the 4 passages and the total time allotted for this section is 80 minutes. So, you will get very limited time for each passage and you need to complete the reading and answering within that time limit. This can turn out to be a hectic task if you didn’t get enough practice on reading and the only way to fulfil this stage is through increasing the reading speed.

• Learn skimming and scanning: These are two techniques that will increase your speed of reading while attending TOEFL reading section. Both this techniques helps you to get the overall idea about the passage without reading the passage in detailed manner.

• Sometimes detailed reading helps: Once you go through the TOEFL reading questions after skimming the passage, you may feel that you have scanned some part of the question in some paragraph. At this time detailed reading of that paragraph can help you to get the correct answer quickly.

• Skip the question if you feel stuck: Whenever you feel stuck with some TOEFL reading question, don’t hesitate to skip the question and move on to the next one. Because, if you keep on trying for that particular question answer, you may lose your valuable time and the chance to attend some other easy questions.

• Read the instructions carefully:  This is the most important TOEFL reading tip. Read all the instructions given on the question paper before attending the question. These instructions will provide you information about the number of words to be used in each sentences, word counts etc.

• Watch out for spelling and grammar errors: Making any spelling and grammar errors can turn out to be real danger situations. This will reduce your marks and take your TOEFL score to very low level.
